Every day we deal with sewer pipes blocked by habits that seem harmless. Maintenance does not need special equipment, just a little care over what goes down the pipe.
A blockage often does not appear suddenly. It starts as a small delay in drainage that goes unnoticed, until the pipe blocks completely and the water has nowhere to go.
What blocks a pipe
Fats and oils poured down the sink solidify inside the pipe and trap other debris. Hair, wet wipes, food scraps and tree roots that get into the joints are the most common causes of blockage we come across.
Over time these materials build up gradually and narrow the pipe's bore until flow stops completely. The problem usually gets worse at points where the pipe changes slope or direction, where debris collects more easily.
The 7 habits
The habits below significantly reduce the chance of a blockage.
- Do not pour cooking oil and fat down the sink. Let it cool and put it in the bin.
- Use strainers on bathroom and kitchen drains to catch hair and debris.
- Avoid flushing wet wipes and hygiene products down the toilet, even if the packaging says they break down.
- Flush traps regularly with hot water so that soap residue does not stick.
- Keep an eye on plants and trees near the pipe route. Roots seek out moisture and grow into the joints.
- Do not tip soil, ash or building debris into manholes during work in the yard.
- Ask for a preventive camera inspection every few years, so you see the condition of the pipe before a problem appears.
None of these habits take much effort, but keeping to them consistently noticeably reduces how often blockages occur and extends the life of the drainage system.
When to call a crew
If you notice that water is draining more slowly than usual, gurgling from the traps, or an unpleasant smell around the manholes, it is a good time to ask for a check before the situation gets worse.
Acting early stops a minor issue turning into a full blockage that needs intensive cleaning.
If the same blockage keeps coming back at the same point despite regular cleaning, this usually points to a deeper problem in the pipe, such as a crack or root intrusion, which needs inspection rather than a simple unblock.
The role of camera inspection
A pipe camera with a length counter lets us see exactly what has built up inside the pipe, at what point and at what depth, without any excavation. Access is through the existing manhole.
